Teaching

While I was an undergraduate student at Hampden-Sydney College (a small liberal arts college), my very first economics professor opened the course by stating, "I am not here to teach you what to think; I'm here to teach you how to think." That approach is one that I carry into my own courses. I believe that teaching is the art of empowering students with a new way of approaching the world and letting those students discover where that approach will lead them. It is the fundamental task of the teacher to excite young minds with new concepts, to provide students with the analytical tools necessary to make sense of the world, and to offer guidance centered on those areas towards which students find themselves drawn. My goal in the classroom is to inspire my students' inner economist and to instill in them an excitement and passion for economics and ideas.
